Book Review – Kim Novak: Her Art and Life by Kim Novak

At the height of her powers in 1956, the Lavender Blonde, Kim Novak, was crowned the number 1 box office star in the world and for three years she held that standing, drawing more and more fans to her movies.

She worked with prestigious directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Otto Preminger, while onscreen she romanced some of Hollywood’s top leading men. Hers was a world of glamour and mystery, yet her stardom was almost accidental.

Kim never intended to set the world ablaze with her face and figure flickering across movie theater screens. As a young girl, she found solace in the world of her imagination, and she loved to draw.

While in college, Kim won two scholarships to the Art Institute of Chicago and dreamed of becoming a fine artist.

Kim Novak: Her Art and Life takes us back to Kim’s roots, exhibiting her sensitivity and extraordinary powers of self expression, while serving as a peek at the impetus which fires her limitless imagination.

This memoir also proves to be a worthy retrospective of this legendary actress and her personal journey through life.

what did i enjoy?

The personal touch. There’s nothing like reading someone’s own words about their own life, detailing what was going through their mind, what fears and dreams they had, and the struggles they faced and overcame.

Each time I read through this book I come away with a feeling of having spent an afternoon with Kim Novak. I feel that I know who she is at her core. How often do we get this kind of opportunity to “meet” a cinematic icon? Hardly ever. But Miss Novak reveals herself to her readers with bravery, transparency, and a desire to share what she’s learned from the ups and downs of her very full life.

I love books which can be approached in many different ways and this one fits the bill. Kim Novak: Her Art and Life can be read cover to cover in a single sitting, or if there’s less time, it welcomes dipping into for a poem or two, while benefitting revisitation to reflect on the gorgeous, captivating artwork.

As an extra bonus, Miss Novak has signed a number of copies before placing them on the market. Seriously, I have to pinch myself from time to time because I still can’t believe I have her autograph! I feel so blessed and honored to have the signature of one of my role models and favorite actresses.

what would i change?

Nothing! This book sets out what it was meant to do and does it well; although, I do wonder how well my copy will hold up over time because of its fragile nature.

The pages of the book are lovely and glossy, but the cover is very thin paperback. I feel like something a little more substantial might have been a better fit to house this treasure of a book.

who is this book for?

If you’re looking for a book detailing Kim’s film work and her life in Hollywood, this is not it. She does touch on her experience briefly with some excellent and rarely seen photographs, but as the title clearly says, this is about her art and the fascinating life she has led.

With that said, for fans of Miss Novak this book is a must. It is a celebration of her many talents, her deep love for and connection with animals, and her steely resolve to hold her head up high as she navigates the hills and valleys of life.

Kim Novak: Her Art and Life is tailor made for those who have been wondering what lies behind the mystique and persona of this notoriously enigmatic actress. Art lovers will also appreciate Kim’s boundless creativity, her striking use of color and imagery, and her beautiful way with words.

want to know more?

Kim’s website is filled with her art and poetry, many of which are included in this book.

Those who would like to know more about this topic might enjoy Kim Novak on Camera by Larry Kleno. I’m halfway through this biography style coffee table book which has more information on her films and career; while it does not have the personal touch, it is written by an author who has admiration and respect for his subject.

Kim Novak: Her Art and Life is sold exclusively at The Butler Institute of American Art where Kim has bequeathed her vast collection of paintings.
