Sometimes it’s tough being a classic movie fan, isn’t it? I don’t know about you, but when I sit down to watch a movie, I’m surrounded by so many great titles it can be overwhelming…in the best possible way.
You know the saying “you can never have too much of a good thing.” And as classic movie fans, there are so. many. good. things.
That leads us to today’s topic, which affords me the privilege to dote on some of the “good things” from the movies – the handsome men from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
I’ve written about My Favorite Leading Men sometime in the past, so I will be using this opportunity to share my admiration for a different group of dashing gents.
Flaming Hot…Five Reasons Why Tag
This amorous Valentine’s themed tag is the brainchild of fellow bloggers Realweedgiemidget Reviews (who tagged me) and Thoughts All Sorts. I wanted to write a similar post for Valentine’s Day but never got it off the ground, so thanks, you two, for the inspiration!
Here are the rules:
- You must add the name of the blog that tagged you AND those of the Thoughts All Sorts and Realweegiemidget Reviews with links to ALL these sites.. and use the natty cat themed picture promoting this post. This picture is found later in this post…
- List 5 of your all-time swoon-worthy characters from TV or Film i.e crushes/objects of your affection. And also do mention the actor or actress who plays them, as you might like James Bond as played by Timothy Dalton and no one else.. etc etc
- Link (Tag) to 5 other bloggers.
- Add lovely pictures, gifs or videos of those you selected.
- If you don’t have a blog (or don’t have time to write a post) join in with your choices on Twitter with this #5TheFlamingHot5ReasonsWhy Tag and tag @realweegiemidge and @Thoughtsallsort and the person who tagged you in your tweet.
- Oh…and post these rules.
Let’s begin!
Tyrone Power
- Do I really need to explain? Tyrone Power was one of the most handsome men to ever grace the silver screen. He had a crystal clear speaking voice, where every word was understood, and he spoke his lines as if he really meant them, that they came from deep inside.
- That smile – wow.
- Although he had a nobility about him and a confidence of bearing, he never comes across as arrogant or stuffy. A sincerity always shines through his performances.
- He could play any genre, any role. He even played Zorro – one of the coolest heroes and swashbucklers of all time.
- I dare you not to swoon during his romantic scenes. Underneath Power’s tenderness lies a fervent passion for his love interest. The stuff dating and marriage templates are made of.
Ricardo Montalban
- If you were to look up charm in the dictionary I’m pretty sure there would be a picture of Mexican actor Ricardo Montalban staring back at you.
- He had it all, didn’t he? Elegance, masculinity, and the accent.
- Montalban was a fabulous dancer. Any girl would feel like a queen dancing in his arms.
- He started Nosotros, a foundation providing better opportunities for Latinos, because he did not approve of how they were being portrayed in Hollywood. The man had backbone.
- He had integrity and a zest for life. A very attractive combination if you ask me!
Gary Cooper
- There’s something inherently endearing about the mild mannered innocence and naivety of Coop. Watching his gentle nature being swept up in the powerful forces of love is hard to describe. But when a guarded temperament like his fall in love, they fall hard and deep into the object of their affection. It’s the real deal for them. Think of him being seduced by Barbara Stanwyck in Ball of Fire.
- The man was born to wear a hat.
- There was magic in his eyes. No words needed, they spoke volumes.
- His heroic image projects a protective, loyal nature.
- According to his friends, he seemed like the sweetest, nicest guy you’d ever want to meet.
Gordon MacRae
- First things first…Have you heard him sing? I admit it’s hard for me to buy him as a tough guy in Carousel, but when he starts singing “If I Loved You” and “Soliloquy,” he’s as perfect as can be. His acting during these notoriously musically difficult songs is magnificent. He brings you right into his character’s shoes in an emotionally intimate way. MacRae’s velvety baritone voice harbors authentic intensity that is tempered with a serene gentle quality. In short, it’s gloriously gorgeous. I can’t listen to him without getting goosebumps.
- It’s hard to resist his boyish charm.
- Again, that smile.
- He had a benevolent nature. Later in life, MacRae succumbed to the bottle but conquered it and helped others overcome their struggle as well.
- Warmth and genuineness come through when he’s on screen. Just watch him in Oklahoma! and you’ll see what I mean.
Gilbert Roland
- This handsome gentleman had a career that spanned seven decades, beginning in the 1920’s and ending in the 1980’s. He survived the transition from silent to sound and from leading man to character actor. Versatility was his mojo.
- As one of Hollywood’s original “Latin lovers” Roland projected virility, danger, and a lust for life.
- Charisma. He had it in spades.
- Time was kind to him. Along with versatility, he had longevity and was able to maintain his youthful appearance and physique well into his later years.
- In real life, Roland was good friends with Buster Keaton and was a sentimental man who sought out the beauty in life. He said this upon returning to visit his hometown: “You go everywhere, do everything, still there are some places you can’t forget. The people and the land. If you forget the beauty of your youth, you are no more than an animal.” A sense of humor combined with an appreciation of life, I’d call that a jackpot!
So there you have it! 5 men from the Golden Age who with their charm, appeal, and dashing good looks continue to dazzle those who are lucky enough to discover them.
And now I nominate these 5 lovely bloggers for this air conditioning required Flaming Hot Tag…
- Movies Meet Their Match
- Hamlette’s Soliloquy
- Totalleemac
- The Classic Film Connection
- The Wonderful World of Cinema…and anyone else who wants to join in!
Now it’s over to you, what screen idol makes your heart skip a beat?
A very nice list you got there Muse, love the varied mix of choices there. I too am a big Gilbert Roland fan, though I have to admit it was more for the Westerns he made in Italy in the late 1960’s. Just something so gentlemanly about him, even with the hard ruggedness.
Thanks, Moviefanman, glad you enjoyed this! Oh, cool, I will have to check those out one day! I was really surprised to learn of Roland’s longevity. While Gable was fading out, Roland was still going strong. Agreed, well said!
I saw an interview Ricardo Montalban gave speaking about working with Roland on Cheyenne Autumn. You would probably enjoy it 🙂 The Roland convo starts near the end. Here’s the link if you want to take a look: https://youtu.be/-KIDfU2_lqg
Good grief is it hot in here 🔥🥰!!
All well and good for you lovely folks in the northern hemisphere, but I gotta tell you, I’m now BOILING down here 😂! (Not that I’m really complaining 😋💕)
Such a fun and sexy tag!
Loved reading (and drooling at) your answers Ari. What a stunning bunch of lads 🤩
That still shot of Montalban dancing… my word, that really does need to be prefaced with a health warning of some kind 🤤💗 Same must be said for that Roland stare. Here I was, scrolling along, fanning myself and then BAM 😍 Hello handsome!
Also, your point number 5 for Mr. Power – Spot on 😘🤌 *chef’s kiss*
Thank you so much for tagging me lovely 💝
It’s going to be hard work, culling my list down to just five. Tough job, but for you and the other ladies, I’ll struggle through it as best I can 😉
Side note – my favourite of your answers = Gary Cooper “the man was born to wear a hat.’ 😂 Love it and wholeheartedly agree 💯
Xox
Haha! I love your sense of humor, Lee!! You totally made my morning 🙂 “a health warning of some kind”…too funny! I know…isn’t that Roland stare a killer? Whew!
You’re welcome, can’t wait to read your post! ❤ Keep that air conditioning blasting, you’re gonna need it to get through this rough assignment 😉
I adore your lovely choices especially Richardo, and as for one in this category that makes my heart skip adding Rock Hudson. Do add this post for your (not so) shameless plug this week.
Thanks, Gill! Ooo great choice…who doesn’t love Rock Hudson? 😉 This weekend was so busy, but I’ll try to remember for next time…Thanks again for the fun tag! ❤
Hi Classic Movie Muse! I published my review of ‘The Man with the Golden Arm’ for the Kim Novak Blogathon early. Here’s the link:
https://18cinemalane.com/2022/02/20/take-3-the-man-with-the-golden-arm-review/
Hi Sally, thank you so much! I look forward to reading your piece 🙂
This is the very first time I’ve ever been tagged in anything! 😀 I actually read your post last night – and when I saw my name, I got so excited that I immediately started sketching out my possible list…and forgot to, you know, actually like the post, or comment, or say “thank you”, or anything. 😉
It never ceases to amaze me how vast the world of classic films really is. I find it endlessly interesting that you and I technically share the same interest, yet our specific “points” of interest very rarely cross. You’re constantly bringing my attention to films and actors who are totally new to me – and here, you’ve highlighted five gentlemen who are barely on my radar, if at all. (I’m not sure I’ve ever even heard Gilbert Roland’s name.)
I will say that have been developing a growing appreciation for Ricardo Montalbán in the last year, and his zest for life is exactly what caught my eye. <3
I could gush about Hollywood men forever, so I’m definitely participating. 😀 Even though I do have the basics sketched out, it always takes me longer to put a post together than I imagine – but I’ll try not to hasten too long! 🙂 Thanks again for thinking of me! <3
Yay, so glad you’re taking the plunge, Jillian! 🙂 And I agree with you about the vastness of classic films! I’m always learning something new from other bloggers whether it’s movies, actors, books, or just film history in general. It’s so fun because you never run out of things to learn and discover. Total bliss haha! ❤
From my list, Roland is my latest discovery so he’s pretty new to me as well. I saw his picture in a book. It totally captivated me and I had to learn more about him…
Glad we share a fondness for Montalban ❤ He made a few movies with Esther Williams and they were a terrific onscreen pair. They also shared similar temperaments according to Esther’s autobiography, but yes, that zest for life is irresistible!
I’m so looking forward to your post…You’re welcome! Happy blogging! 🙂
It occurs to me that this post might be the perfect occasion for gifs 😉 – and I’ve noticed you utilize them quite well. 🙂 Do you make your own or find them somewhere else? How do you add them to your post?
Ooo la la! 😉 I find them online just like I find my images. You can search for whatever your searching for and just add “gif” after it. And you can add them to the post the same way you add images. Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes 🙂
How about Charles Boyer? He’d make my list!
Sure, he definitely fits in this category! Now I’m curious to know who your other 4 would be…Thank you for stopping by 🙂
1. Charles Boyer
2. John Gilbert
3. Wallace Reid
4. Cary Grant, of course!
5. Gene Kelly
Love your blog!
Great list! Wallace Reid is new to me, but looks like quite the dapper gentleman from his picture. (I had to take a quick glance.) Gene Kelly has the dreamiest smile, doesn’t he? 😉 Thank you for reading, Book Hogs!
