At the height of her powers in 1956, the Lavender Blonde, Kim Novak, was crowned the number 1 box office star in the world and for three years she held that standing, drawing more and more fans to her movies.
She worked with prestigious directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Otto Preminger, while onscreen she romanced some of Hollywood’s top leading men. Hers was a world of glamour and mystery, yet her stardom was almost accidental.
Kim never intended to set the world ablaze with her face and figure flickering across movie theater screens. As a young girl, she found solace in the world of her imagination, and she loved to draw.
While in college, Kim won two scholarships to the Art Institute of Chicago and dreamed of becoming a fine artist.
Kim Novak: Her Art and Life takes us back to Kim’s roots, exhibiting her sensitivity and extraordinary powers of self expression, while serving as a peek at the impetus which fires her limitless imagination.
This memoir also proves to be a worthy retrospective of this legendary actress and her personal journey through life.
what did i enjoy?
The personal touch. There’s nothing like reading someone’s own words about their own life, detailing what was going through their mind, what fears and dreams they had, and the struggles they faced and overcame.
Each time I read through this book I come away with a feeling of having spent an afternoon with Kim Novak. I feel that I know who she is at her core. How often do we get this kind of opportunity to “meet” a cinematic icon? Hardly ever. But Miss Novak reveals herself to her readers with bravery, transparency, and a desire to share what she’s learned from the ups and downs of her very full life.
I love books which can be approached in many different ways and this one fits the bill. Kim Novak: Her Art and Life can be read cover to cover in a single sitting, or if there’s less time, it welcomes dipping into for a poem or two, while benefitting revisitation to reflect on the gorgeous, captivating artwork.
As an extra bonus, Miss Novak has signed a number of copies before placing them on the market. Seriously, I have to pinch myself from time to time because I still can’t believe I have her autograph! I feel so blessed and honored to have the signature of one of my role models and favorite actresses.
what would i change?
Nothing! This book sets out what it was meant to do and does it well; although, I do wonder how well my copy will hold up over time because of its fragile nature.
The pages of the book are lovely and glossy, but the cover is very thin paperback. I feel like something a little more substantial might have been a better fit to house this treasure of a book.
who is this book for?
If you’re looking for a book detailing Kim’s film work and her life in Hollywood, this is not it. She does touch on her experience briefly with some excellent and rarely seen photographs, but as the title clearly says, this is about her art and the fascinating life she has led.
With that said, for fans of Miss Novak this book is a must. It is a celebration of her many talents, her deep love for and connection with animals, and her steely resolve to hold her head up high as she navigates the hills and valleys of life.
Kim Novak: Her Art and Life is tailor made for those who have been wondering what lies behind the mystique and persona of this notoriously enigmatic actress. Art lovers will also appreciate Kim’s boundless creativity, her striking use of color and imagery, and her beautiful way with words.
want to know more?
Kim’s website is filled with her art and poetry, many of which are included in this book.
Those who would like to know more about this topic might enjoy Kim Novak on Camera by Larry Kleno. I’m halfway through this biography style coffee table book which has more information on her films and career; while it does not have the personal touch, it is written by an author who has admiration and respect for his subject.
Kim Novak: Her Art and Life is sold exclusively at The Butler Institute of American Art where Kim has bequeathed her vast collection of paintings.
This post is my contribution to The Kim Novak Blogathon: An 89th Birthday Celebration hosted by yours truly! The festivities for this beautiful lady continue HERE…
Wow, Kim Novak is an excellent painter as well as a fine actress. Some of her work has a Van Gogh vibe to it I think, very vivid colors. Quite an interesting piece there Muse, nice touch for the Novak marathon.
A woman of many talents, indeed! Yes, I’d agree. Some of her artwork does fit that description quite well. Thanks, Moviefanman! So glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Wow! You should probably read this book, too! 🙂

My entry! 🙂
I would love to! Thanks, Debbi! 🙂
Isn’t it a blessing that we are able to see what goes on in the mind, soul and extraordinary imagination of this fabulous woman? 🥰
‘Visual artist,’ ‘multimedia artist,’ painter, poet, writer, actress…
…we are not worthy 🙌💗
Throw in her adoration for animals, her honesty, openness, vulnerability and of course her strength in speaking out and up about her Hollywood experiences… my goodness, we have been so lucky to have been afforded a front row seat to so much of it.
Over-the-blooming-moon that you scored a signed copy!! Ahhh!!
My goodness you must have been bouncing for days 🥳!
Heck, I’m bouncing for you now!!!
A wonderful write up and tribute Ari 💝 Thank you.
I really do think I am going to have to place an order for her book. Her work is right up my ‘impressionist-loving’ alley. I could (and have) stared longingly at her pieces for quite a while now. I adore them all, but my word there is something so captivating and arresting about that self portrait of hers. I see and feel something different each and every time I look at it ❤️ Such a powerful talent.
💐 Many thanks again for hosting this fabulous celebration x
It really is a blessing, Lee, that this book opens the gateway into Miss Novak’s poetic soul. Totally agree!
Thank you! Haha, I still am bouncing! 😉 The book and her signature are among my dearest treasures ❤
That’s wonderful to hear…as a fan of impressionism myself, I know you will love it! I love what you said about seeing and feeling something different each time you take a glance at her work. That is so very true! The mysteries she includes within her paintings also make them endlessly captivating.
The pleasure is all mine 🙂 Thank you so much for stopping by and for taking the time to leave this beautiful comment! ❤ xo
What a multi talented lady, how lucky you are in having an autographed copy. I have two autographed books in my autobiography collection which I treasure for the personal touch. Lovely review, and beautiful photos of her work.
Thanks so much, Gill! Isn’t she though? Autographed books are so very special ❤ if I remember correctly you have Larry Hagman’s, right?
Correct, and Linda Gray’s..
Ah, very nice! 🙂
Lovely paintings! 😀 Sort of Monet-ish. And she writes poetry, too? Wow!
I love memoirs for the same reason (about the personal touch). <3 I find them endlessly interesting. 🙂
Novak Newbie Question: Why was she called the Lavender Blonde?
Yes, definitely! Her work has an Impressionist vibe to it and her poetry is as mesmerizing as her paintings ❤
The Lavender Blonde was part of the image and persona that Columbia created for her. There might be a reason that I don’t know of, but from what I gather, it was all fabricated for publicity. They would subject her to lavender rinses for her blonde hair, had her dressing room decked out in lavender, and she would send notes on lavender stationery. She grew to hate the color, but years after she left Hollywood she began to embrace it again. Not because it was part of her image, but because she genuinely liked it. As you can see, her book was designed in purple, lots of her art features the color, and she signed the book in purple ink.
You have an autographed copy?! Awesome!
I didn’t realize she received 2 scholarships from the Chicago Art Institute. Nice going! The colours she uses in her paintings are stunning. She really does have a lot of talent.
Thanks for sharing your love of this book with us.
Indeed! Aren’t those colors gorgeous? You’re very welcome…Thank you for stopping by, Ruth! 🙂
I like her artwork… it’s very impressionistic, but at the same time you can tell what it is. You’re fortunate to have an autographed copy! (Did you know that before you bought it? 🙂
It is…I really enjoy the mysteries (as she calls them) she adds in her works too. So cool! Did you notice the faces and the bird in the ocean painting? I did know it was signed, yes! I’m not sure I’ll ever get over the fact though…it makes me so happy 🙂
Thank you for reading, Charity!
It’s always so interesting to see the art of movie stars. I’ve looking into both Audrey and Katharine Hepburn’s for past blogathons. I love that it gives you a glimpse into their mind. And how cool that it was also written by her as that always gives great insights as well! That’s so neat that you have an autographed copy! Last year I bought a used Eve Arden autobiography for $6 and it was autographed. I was so excited!!
Thanks so much for hosting this blogathon. It’s made me realize I need to rewatch some of Novak’s films that I watched when I was too young to appreciate them and her performance.
Laura/Phyl
I agree, that glimpse into their mind and soul is so fascinating. Awesome, I will be sure to check out your posts on the art of the Hepburns…Wow, what a terrific find!! That is very exciting!
I’m so glad you were able to join us, Laura. Thanks again! 🙂

Those paintings look gorgeous! And how cool that you have a signed copy–that is awesome. 🙂
Thanks, Rebecca! 🙂 Aren’t they stunning?
This looks like a beautiful book! Thanks fo putting the light on it! I definitely sounds like a must, not only for her fans but for whoever wants to discover her. 🙂
My pleasure! I could talk about this book all day 😉 And you are absolutely right, this book is a treat and a great way to know Ms. Novak. Thank you for reading, Virginie! 🙂
